Own a pig
Own a Pig without the hassle
If you like the idea of raising your own free-range pig but you just don't think the neighbours will go for it, we may have the solution. Let us raise it for you!
Our Middlewhite gilt Zoe, is due(Hopefully) around the 20th October.WeI crossed her with a young Gloucestershire Old Spots boar. This cross reputedly produces a very good pork pig. Check back soon for updates.
You get to choose which piglet you would like to buy (subject to availability). We will send you a monthly update and photographs of your piglet. You can even come and visit it (subject to prior arrangement).
At the end you get to choose what you would like back from your pig and how you would like the meat butchered. It only takes 5-6 months before you take delivery of succulent, mouth-watering pork, with the added bonus of knowing exactly how and where it all came from. Please bear in mind that your pig will have a carcase weight of about 40-50Kgs so we are talking about a lot of meat (but the best meat you will ever eat), so please make sure you have the freezer space available.
You can even share a pig with some friends and split the cost and the meat.
Advantages
- The biggest advantage (I believe) of 'Owning your own pig', is that you can actually come visit your pig. You will see your pig running, rooting, playing with his/her siblings and generally enjoying life. You will get the pork back at the end, from your own pig, that you have watched grow and enjoy life. This is ultimate traceability!!
- You don't have any capital outlay. Arks, fencing, paddock etc. are provided.
- You don't need to bother with all the bureaucratic paperwork (herd number, movement notices, etc). We do all that.
- You can go on holidays without having to find someone to look after your pig!
- If you only want one pig it does not mean keeping it on its own. Pigs are very social creatures and hate to be on their own.
- There will be no unexpected vet's bills, we take care of these if necessary.
- In the unlikely event of your pig becoming unwell and dying, we will replace him/her with another pig so your investment will be safeguarded.
Disadvantages
- What you will miss out on is the everyday contact with your pig, as these are very charming animals (though this may make eating it easier!)
Cost
The cost of owning your own pig will be approx €360. This works out at €9 per kilo for a 40Kg pig.(carcase weight). If the carcase is heavier or lighter, the cost will be prorated and the charge will be adjusted accordingly.
This includes feed, straw, veterinary fees, slaughter cost, butchering, packing and delivery within Dublin 16, 22 and 24. A €5 delivery charge will apply for all other areas in Dublin city and North Wicklow. We do not charge for the updates or pictures.
A €100 deposit is required(unfortunately the deposit is non refundable), this is taken off the total at the end. You can use the Paypal button below to pay your deposit and reserve your pig. Or, you can send me a mail and I will respond with a mail confirming your order with a Paypal link to pay your deposit.
If you do not want to use Paypal or credit card, you can come visit, pay your deposit by cash and pick your pig yourself.
